UW Oshkosh Sociology Department Advising
Whether you’re a future Titan, current Sociology major or just wanting to learn more about what being a Sociology major/minor means, you’re in the right place. Here is a bit more information about our advising process:
Students with less than 60 credits
Students who have not completed all of their general education requirements, or students who have earned less than 60 credits, should continue to see Ann Kunkle Jones or other UARC advisors.
Advising after 60 credits
You MUST meet with an advisor in order to enroll in order to register for upper-level classes within the department.
Declared sociology majors will be assigned a faculty advisor from the sociology department when they enroll in Sociology 203. No later than two weeks before class registration begins for the next semester, students must attend a meeting with the sociology faculty about major requirements, faculty interests and expertise and other information. It is at this time students will be able to indicate their advisor preference.
Current UWO students who haven’t declared the major and have not yet enrolled in Sociology 203 are also strongly urged to attend the aforementioned meeting in the same semester that they declare the major.
Students may request a change of advisor at any time by contacting the department chair.
Students who attend the introductory meeting will have priority in advisor preference over those students who do not. Students with an advisor assigned in a previous semester will be continue to work with the same advisor, unless otherwise indicated. If no advisor preference is given, one will be assigned by the department chair.
Transfer students with a declared sociology major are required to take Sociology 203, but if they do not do so in their first semester here, they are strongly urged to attend the aforementioned meeting in their first semester here.
